How do you remove the top from smoke detectors to change the battery.?

I don't see a category for this, but it's driving me crazy. The screeching beeping every 30 seconds. Directions say turn the top counter clockwise and pull off. It won't turn, it won't budge. Help! How do you remove the top from smoke detectors to change the battery.?Rotating counterclockwise is how most smoke detectors come off the wall so you can change the battery. You may need to be forceful with it. It is necessary to change smoke detector batteries every 6-12 months. (the reason you didn't have to do it before was probably because your home had a smoke detector that was hard-wired into the home's electrical system)

If you still simply can't do it, some fire departments will help people with their smoke detectors. Call your fire department's non-emergency number and see if they would be willing to send someone out to assist you.
